How Much Does an AI Phone Agent Cost in 2026?

Per-minute, per-call, and flat-fee pricing models across the AI phone-answering market. Real numbers.

AI phone agents — voice agents that answer your business line, qualify the caller, and book or quote — have collapsed in price by 73% in the last 24 months. In 2024 a real AI receptionist ran $1.20/minute. In 2026 the same capability runs $0.18–$0.45/minute. But the published price hides three cost lines that determine your real bill.

The honest math: a venue, retreat center, or tour operator taking 60 inbound calls a month at a 6-minute average call length will spend $180–$540/month on AI phone agent infrastructure in 2026. The variance is almost entirely about which pricing model you accept — and most vendors will let you negotiate the model, not just the rate.

The three pricing models

Vendors quote one of three models. They're not equivalent:

  1. Per-minute. $0.15–$0.65/minute of call time. Predictable if your call lengths are consistent. Punishing if you have one long call.
  2. Per-call (or per-resolved-call). $1.50–$8.00 per call regardless of length. Predictable on volume. Vendors love this when calls trend longer.
  3. Flat fee + overage. $99–$497/month for X calls or Y minutes, with overage at per-minute or per-call rates.

The hybrid model — flat platform fee plus per-minute usage — is becoming standard for AI agents that include inventory integration and booking capability.

Per-minute pricing, real vendors

Public per-minute rates as of mid-2026, for vendors I've personally tested:

  • Vapi (developer-grade): $0.05/minute infrastructure + LLM costs (~$0.10–$0.30/minute Claude/GPT-4) + voice ($0.07/minute Deepgram + ElevenLabs). All-in: $0.22–$0.42/minute.
  • Retell AI: $0.31/minute all-in (voice + LLM + telephony).
  • Bland AI: $0.09/minute base, plus integration fees.
  • Voiceflow / Synthflow: $0.13–$0.25/minute depending on tier.
  • Goodcall: $59/month for 50 minutes, then per-minute overage.

Per-minute alone is fine for simple FAQ-style agents. For agents that quote, qualify, and book, expect the higher end of the range.

Per-call pricing, real vendors

Some vendors price per resolved call:

  • PolyAI: Custom-quoted, typically $3.50–$7.00 per call for enterprise deployments.
  • Smith.ai (hybrid AI + human): $4.00–$6.50 per call.
  • Ruby Receptionists (live, for comparison): $9.50–$13.00 per call.

Per-call works best when your business takes a lot of short, transactional calls. It punishes you on long discovery calls.

Flat fee + overage, real vendors

This is the dominant model for venue/hospitality-targeted AI agents:

  • Everybooking AI phone agent: included in the platform tiers rather than billed as a separate per-minute line. Includes inventory integration.
  • Numa (restaurant-focused): $199–$499/month bundled.
  • Slang.ai (restaurant-focused): $199/month for full coverage.
  • Dialpad AI: $25–$95/user/month, voice agent included in higher tiers.

Flat fee gives you a predictable bill. The trap is the overage cliff — if your call volume spikes (a Yelp feature, a wedding-season Saturday), the overage can double the bill.

Hidden cost lines

Three lines that don't appear in the published rate:

  • Telephony / phone number. $1–$5/month per number, plus $0.01–$0.03/minute for the underlying carrier minutes. Some vendors include this. Most don't.
  • Voice quality tier. ElevenLabs and PlayHT premium voices cost 2–4× the basic tier. The cheap voice sounds like a 2020 robocaller.
  • Integration setup. A working AI agent needs your inventory, FAQ, calendar, and CRM wired in. Vendors quote $1,500–$8,000 for this. Some include it in a "managed setup" fee.

What you actually pay for a working venue setup

For a venue, retreat, or conference center taking 60 calls/month at 6 minutes average:

  • Developer-grade DIY (Vapi + custom build): $100–$200/month usage, plus $8K–$25K to build it. Total Y1: $11K–$28K.
  • Mid-market managed (Everybooking, Slang, Numa): $150–$500/month all-in, no build cost. Total Y1: $1,800–$6,000.
  • Enterprise (PolyAI, custom): $1,500–$5,000/month, plus $25K+ implementation. Total Y1: $43K+.

The mid-market managed tier is where 80% of operators land in 2026. The DIY tier makes sense only if you're a developer-led operation with ongoing engineering capacity.

The ROI math nobody runs

If your AI phone agent captures even 4 additional bookings a year at a $5K average value, that's $20K in new revenue against $1,800–$6,000 in software cost. The payback period is the first quarter. The reason most operators don't deploy is not cost — it's the 8 hours of setup work to wire up inventory and FAQ.
